Songwriting Tip of the Week. 04/26/04
"We are always doing something, talking, reading, listening to the radio, planning what next. The mind is kept naggingly busy on some easy, unimportant external thing all day." (Brenda Ueland)

...Ever notice creation of your best melodies and song ideas happen in your car or right before sleeping? We never allow ourselves the freedom and the time to write, the time to enjoy the work we have done, the time to live and enjoy life, or the time to just 'be' and do nothing...These wonderfully small pleasures that we don't allow time for can lead to our best songwriting...
This week, 'make' time once a day, even if its 10 minutes, to slow down life and write a memory...or better yet, write a memorable song!

“We will discover the nature of our particular genius when we stop trying to conform to our own or to other peoples’ models, learn to be ourselves, and allow our natural channel to open.”
(Shakti Gawain)

...When writing, don’t censor your ‘inner artist’. Let your emotions flow through your pen and let your creativity pour out onto your paper. Get your feelings and thoughts out of your head - don’t be scared of what’s inside you! Most importantly, capture the emotions of what you are writing.
You can always focus on structure or rewrite it again later but you may never feel that same emotion again...

"Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there."
(Bernice Fitz-Gibbon)

At first, being creative is a very subtle entity… It is that voice and those thoughts that quietly give amazing song and musical ideas… Sometimes, the mind is too noisy to listen and understand. Sometimes, we hear but don’t listen - We hear ideas but don’t write them down. Other times, there are ideas that have potential but need massaging. These ideas usually visit the most often and often get neglected the most too…

It all starts with intent listening when inspiration speaks. Then take action.
By turning down inner noise and focusing on those abstract, crazy, and very personal ideas, more song possibilities begin to unfold. When one is open and always listening, more ideas can be heard. Very rarely to often times never is a great song ‘inspired to perfection’. They are handcrafted, reconstructed, and massaged to perfection - massaged to sooth the ears of others…

Song massaging is a process which begins with ‘turning up’ what we miss on a daily basis, capturing it, and then editing it to perfection. The power of rewriting and editing is beyond comprehension. New lyrics, different rhythms & rhymes, new melodies, entirely different arrangements, or new music can all be added to or subtracted from any composition… The problem most have is holding on to their baby in fear of change, fear of it maturing, fear of becoming something bigger and greater, fear of success…

By turning up the volume and massaging the muscles of ideas, songwriting and music productions can transform from infancy to maturation overnight.

“What we must decide is perhaps how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are.” (Edgar Z. Friedenberg)

These days simplicity is out of the window… When record companies would develop artists for 5-10 years and invest the time, effort, and budget to make sure they became the best writers, musicians, and performers, artists only had to focus on the ‘one’ thing they did best.
In today’s music industry, it is much more complicated. Artists must become an ‘all in one’ in order to compete. They must write, play, produce, record the music; sing, dance, setup their music business, create themselves an ‘image’, and the list goes on and on…

Yes this must seem overwhelming and slightly discouraging, but there is an answer…

Focus on brilliance. What is it that you are truly brilliant at? What is it that you find yourself always thinking about during the day - which aspect of your ‘artistry’ is it? Do you hurry home every day to write more songs, write more music, to dance, to sing, to play an instrument, to work on setting up your music business? Whichever it is and whatever order you enjoy it in will determine your brilliance, your value…

By spending time in areas you’re already valuable in, you can get to your goals quicker by finding others who can help you in the areas your uncomfortable in. It is proven that you are more efficient by doing the things you love and eventually, it can make the parts you don’t love flow much smoother… Always remember that indulging in what you love is just around the corner…
